Around Rotary’s World

Sweat Equity Opportunity
Sleeping Children Around the World - SCAW is a registered Canadian Charity founded in 1970 by Margaret and Murray Dryden.

Murray Dryden’s dream, after witnessing children in 3rd world countries sleeping on the concrete in a sidewalk hovel or on bare earth in a hut was to initiate a project that would provide Bed Kits for children. Prior to Murray’s death the SCAW Foundation was established and son’s Ken and Dave of hockey fame have carried on supporting their fathers dream. The proceeds from the Foundation cover all administrative costs. With zero overhead SCAW guarantees that: 100% of every bedkit donation reaches a needy child

$35CAN = ONE BEDKIT Each $35 donation provides one bedkit consisting of; a padded mattress, pillow, sheet, blanket mosquito net if applicable, clothes outfit, towel and school supplies Bedkit contents vary from country to country depending on local needs.

The manufacture of Bedkits occurs overseas in the country of distribution and locally produced bedkits result in:
  1. the elimination of overseas transport costs
  2. provision of labour and materials at minimal cost
  3. employment of families in the country
  4. assistance to the local economy and the country as a whole

What’s in it for Sunrise Rotarians?
  1. It’s an opportunity to Serve and Make a Difference in the World
  2. We can make a difference without writing a cheque from our Charities Account and that’s Sweat Equity baby
  3. We achieve one of our goals for this year which was to get more involved in sweat equity projects.

How could we make it work?
  1. Currently Rotary clubs in the Peterborough area are involved in SCAW
  2. We would need to acquire a sample bedkit
  3. We could market this as an alternate Christmas Gift – “Give a Good Nights Sleep to a Child this Christmas”.
  4. Solicit contributions from other Rotary clubs; Newcomers; Schools; Seniors organizations; and the general public from a booth at Qualicum Foods

Next Weeks Worker Bees
  1. Greeter – Doug Arbo
  2. 50-50 – Allen Ball
  3. Rotary Moment – Charles Beckingham
  4. Invocation – Pat Fougner

DG Bob Martin’s request for detailed reporting of Rotarians volunteer hours, travel information as well as ongoing financial reporting was again discussed. Club members see the request as being unnecessarily bureaucratic and will relay that to the District Governor when he visits on July 27th.

President David models the headband created as a result of Allen Balls initiative. The headband will be attached to hats and worn by Rotarians at club community functions

Spotlight on Our Community

Town of Qualicum Beach-Quality of Life Survey

The Town of Qualicum Beach is preparing to distribute a community wide survey (Quality of Life Survey) to obtain community feedback on a wide array of issues and Town services. The Quality of Life survey is distributed every six years in conjunction with the review of the Official Community Plan (OCP). It provides valuable information that is used to improve Town services and policies, and to provide information for the Official Community Plan review
As a part of the process to develop this survey, the Town would like feedback from associations, committees, commissions and community groups.
We should be responding as an organization that provides services and/or an organization that has submitted civic improvement proposals (Rotary Stroll). Comments by printed response or email must be submitted by Monday, July 19th
