Around Rotary’s World

101st Rotary International Convention in Montreal

If you want appreciate, the International in, Rotary International and the scope and breadth of the organization, then attend an RI Convention. As President John Kenny expressed in his address to delegates; “One cannot walk the halls of an RI Convention and fail to be amazed — by the countries represented, the languages spoken, the incredible range of ambitious, considered, successful projects on display “

The impressive Flag Ceremony that opened the Convention featured the flags of 220 countries and regions in Rotary’s world.

Over 19,000 Rotarians were on hand at the Centre Bell, home of the Montreal Canadiens, to hear Rotary President John Kenny give his address to the opening Plenary Session

President Kenny’s address focused on his theme for the year The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.
  1. He quoted Moliere;“a man’s true wealth . . . is the good that he does in this world to his fellows.”
  2. He reflected on the place of Rotary clubs in our communities; We believe that Rotary is needed and that a community with a Rotary club is better off than one without.
  3. He expressed his spiritual value as applied to service What we are is God’s gift to us; what we do with it is our gift to God.
  4. And he reflected on Rotarians and Rotary Clubs; What Rotary is, what it will be, what it can become — all of this depends on the choices we make every day, every hour, and every minute. How we serve, whom we help, how to balance our own abilities with the needs of our communities — these are the decisions that will shape the Rotary to come. These are the decisions that are up to you.

President Elect Ray Klinginsmith, a Californian, address focused on Rotary Clubs;"I believe the way for Rotary to remain viable and vibrant in the next century is to help our clubs to be bigger, better, and bolder, Our clubs are the life and breath of Rotary.”

President Nominee Kalyan Banerjee who is an Indian Rotarian quoted Mahatma Ghandi “You be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Best-selling author Greg Mortenson, (Three Cups of Tea) cofounder of the Central Asia Institute, which builds schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, stressed that Rotarians and clubs have to be careful not to impose their values and ideas of what is needed on another culture, but rather take the time to hear what the communities think is most essential. - the need to engage local leaders in a project and create buy-in from the community.
Mortenson also stressed the importance of educating girls – “educate a boy and you impact an individual, educate a girl and you impact a village”

Father Marciano "Rocky" Evangelista, founder of the Tuloy Foundation Inc. and a member of the Rotary Club of Alabang, Metro Manila, Philippines, told Rotarians about the urgency of helping street children.
"Children in distress cannot wait," he said. "For you or me, what is a day or two? But for a child who is slowly being toughened and hardened by the harsh realities of the school of the streets, waiting is just a luxury that he or she cannot afford."

After greeting the audience by singing her hit song "9 to 5," Parton recited The Four-Way Test, saying she also sought a "short, simple, and powerful" statement to guide the Dollywood Foundation: Dream more, learn more, care more, be more.
Parton said she was inspired by her father, who was illiterate but "one of the smartest people" she knew. "He knew it was a crippling thing not to be able to read and to write, so he was proud when people would call me the 'book lady.' And he lived long enough to see my dream come true with the Imagination Library. He was with me all the way."

June 29th Meeting

President Ken presides over his final meeting – “Well Done Ken”

With some relief I’m sure President Ken rang the bell for the last time. It’s been a good year for Ken, lets look at some of the 2009-10 accomplishments:
  1. Allan, Ken and Charles re-wrote our club’s By-Laws
  2. Our Community Services Committee organized our first Coats for Kids initiative
  3. Under Doug Sly’s leadership we successfully solicited Mid Island WCS funds as well as a District Simplified Grant and applied those monies to our biggest International Project in our clubs history
  4. Our Membership Committee under Pat’s leadership brought six new members into our club including three new women members
  5. Perhaps most significantly, Ken has engineered the Visioning process that saw our club establish the goals to achieve our vision of the club we want to become by 2015.
  6. 2009-10 was a good year for our club.
