The Last Two Weeks in Canada

OH CANADA – A HIGH FIVE

Kudos to VANOC, the thousands of Volunteers, the Athletes, the Fans, the thousands of visitors and the weather during week 2 that helped to make these Games of the 21st Winter Olympiad the best damn games ever.
As has been said many times now, these games were a defining moment for Canada and Canadians. What a legacy for our youth, what pride we now all have and further more it’s a pride were not ashamed to shout from the rooftops; somehow we’ve learned how to “Own the Podium” and not be ashamed and apologetic about it; we can still be the polite Canadians but we’re somehow more confident more assertive and less paranoid about what others think of us. I think Canadians at the start of these Games were very conscious and very concerned about our image as a result of the bad press we were receiving in the world Media, I certainly was. The transition was remarkable because at the end of the games we didn’t give a damn what the Guardian was publishing about us; we knew; we had won the day; we didn’t need others to tell us we were OK; we just knew it and that confidence we now feel in being Canadian is a huge part of the legacy of these games.

Isaac Neden, Ken’s father was laid to rest yesterday following a Memorial Service at the Yates Funeral Chapel. The service was attended by an overflow crowd, a testament to the kind of man Isaac Neden was and to the life he led. Allan Gannon, Pat and Ed and Charlotte Herkel attended and extended our sympathy and support to Ken and Dallas on behalf of our Rotary club.

Announcements

President Elect David unable to attend PETS March 5 – 7 in Seattle David reports for Surgery on Wednesday morning at Nanaimo Regional for removal of those pesky kidney stones that have been causing him so much pain and discomfort over these past many weeks and the Doctor has ordered rest and rehab for David following surgery.
It seems to me that we need to advise DGE Bob Martin that some contingency must occur to allow David to serve as our President in 2010-11.

Echo Players Tickets now on sale Circle Wednesday April 7th on your Calendar; that ‘s the night “Waiting for the Parade” will be staged as our Fundraiser for Hospice. Tickets are $20 with $11 going to Hospice. There are a total of 156 tickets and Jim wants each member to purchase 4 tickets. This is a Slam Dunk folks, just do the math, $11 x 156 = $1716 for a beleaguered Hospice who really need this financial shot in the arm. Jim also would like to include a draw for some donated prizes and at $5 per ticket that could/should realize another $500. A Wine & Cheese will precede the show – donations????

Spotlight on Rotary and Rotarians

Our Club in 2015; Whats our Vison
Last week we looked at International Service, this week let’s look at our vision for: Community Service
Here’s our vision for 2015:

  1. Move to more hands on and less cheque writing. Most of our “hands on” or “sweat equity” initiatives have occurred in concert with fundraising – Roses, the Garage Sale, Antique Fair, Show and Shine, Family Days, etc. We also get together for fellowship activities. These activities while sometimes taxing are great for the esprit de corps of our membership.
I can only recall a couple, perhaps three, hands on project that wasn’t either fundraising or fellowship activities; that would be the Playground project at Family Services last year and a few years ago the painting of the fence on Memorial and one or two work parties at Rotary House.
This club got it start with a huge hands on project namely the refurbishing of Valhalla House for Hospice in 1997 and when you look back at the photos and scrapbook of that project its obvious that the initiative provided cohesion and a sense of accomplishment for the member of the then young Sunrise Club.
  2. A strategy for accessing District Simplified Grants. District Simplified Grants match Club funds 50/50 to a maximum of $2500. This means that $2500 of Club funds can be ratcheted up to $5000. We have successfully received 3 DSG’s, the first in 2007-08, the second last year and the Bukati grant this year. To be successful we need to have our application ready for submission to the District by July 1 each year.
  3. Become a sponsor organization for families in need. Not sure what this means, whether it implies providing support for those agencies in our community already supporting families in need (e.g. Salvation Army and SOS) or providing direct support for families in need. Obviously this is something to be explored in more detail, however it does provide ample opportunity for also achieving our wish to be more hands on.
  4. Complete the Rotary Stroll. At the Visioning Session it was implied that if there was going to be a Rotary Stroll it would have to be a continuation of the existing “waterside” walkway. Village Council have turned thumbs down on the concept of crossing the Highway with the Stroll. This is an ambitious and challenging Project, one that would provide great dividends for our Community as well as for our Club – however, lets not kid ourselves, the commitment would be huge.
